Roles of an interventionist

Overuse of Illicit drugs and alcohol have led to the rise in the number of drug and alcohol interventioniststhroughout the world. These interventionists work in the many rehab centers that cater to the millions suffering from substance abuse. They could also be serving as interventionists individually without being associated with a rehab center.

Drug and alcohol Interventionists are counselors who help guide the victims of substance abuse and attempt to get rid of their dependence on these harmful products.

Majority of the time the most difficult step for a drug user is to come to terms with the fact that there is a problem. As family members or loved ones the case might seem a lost one if the user has already gone overboard and made these substances his very essence of survival. In these cases professional help has to be administered to them.

Interventionists are trained in this art and don many a role in transforming the lives of substance abusers. Some of the most noticeable roles are

  • Excuse Buster: As all may know the first stage to the solution of a problem is accepting that a problem exists. But instead of working at getting rid of the problem at hand the drug and alcohol users are compelled to get back to their substances. To family and near ones they provide a plethora of excuses about why they did so. An interventionist on the other hand will look through the excuses to help them face the truth and come to terms with reality.
  • Story Teller and Listener: Many people suffering from substance abuse problems are compelled into doing because of the loneliness in their lives. They have nobody to share their feelings with or even talk to. Sometimes a patient ear is very necessary in building the path to recovery. As a story teller the Interventionist has to put across compelling and inspiring stories of how people trapped in the jaws of substance abuse evaded their doom by a change of lifestyle.
  • Law maker: The Interventionist regulates the activities in the life of the drug user. He recommends lifestyle changes that if adopted would lead to eventual recovery.
  • Counselor and Well Wisher: The Interventionist must communicate to the substance user that the problem that he is up against is not only an individual problem. It affects each and every person around him albeit in a negative way. He must also make him realize that a helping hand will always be there to assist him in reforming his ways.

These are the variety of roles that the alcohol and drug interventionistsmust perform. They must be very wise to achieve their objectives tactfully as it happens often that the victim refuses to co-operate as soon as he realizes that he is being kept away from his drugs. A lot of love affection and care are called for when dealing with these sensitive issues. Proper Intervention is one of the most effective and useful ways to deal with substance abuse problems.
